October 27, 2018 To Local Media For Immediate Release Contact: Doug Painter Painter.doug@yahoo.com STRIPPERS ARRIVE ON SKIDAWAY ISLAND OOPS, THAT’S STRIPERS, AS IN FINS, NOT FEATHERS A new show will soon be opening on our island but the only tails that will be shaking in this act are those of one of America’s favorite gamefish, the hybrid striped bass. Thanks to the Skidaway Island Chapter of the Coastal conservation Association (CCA) and Jeff Wong, owner of The Omelette House chain, more than 1700 hybrid striped bass fingerlings were released this past week in six of our island lagoons. A hybrid striped bass, also known as a wiper or whiterock bass, is cross between a female striped bass and a male white bass. While these fish are sterile, they are quick growers and from their current size of a few inches long will, within two years, grow to football shaped speedsters weighing in at four to six pounds. To promote this growth, your island CCA chapter has already stocked designated lagoons with thousands of threadfin shad, a favorite hybrid bass food. Red Drum Conservation Studies have shown that using short leader rigs with circles hooks can reduce deep hooking and improve the chances of survival for released red drum. This is especially true when fishing in slow or slack water. To be effective, we recommend the following: • a fixed weight or sinker clip that is not more than six inches from the circle hook; • sinker heavier than 2 ounces; • a barbless circle hook (a hook with the point directed straight back toward the shank, and with the barb either compressed or removed); • when using either braided or monofilament mainline, it is advisable to add a 5 foot leader of heavier 80lb– 100lb monofilament or fluorocarbon between the mainline and terminal rig to minimize abrasion and break offs. • depending on the tides, heavier weights may be required. Partners in conservation launch ReleaSense initiative Collaborative effort to make best catch-and-release practices, research available to anglers Shimano, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Harte Research Institute (HRI) for Gulf of Mexico Studies and Coastal Conservation Association (CCA) are proud to announce the launch of a cooperative effort called ReleaSense to promote and enhance the traditional role of anglers as leaders in saltwater fisheries conservation
The incredible biodiversity of our coastal area will be the topic of the CCA of Skidaway’s June meeting and seminar to be held on Monday, June 11, at St. Peter’s Church beginning at 7:00 pm. The presenter will be Captain John “Crawfish” Crawford , Senior Naturalist, Marine Operations Supervisor at the Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant, Skidaway Island. Capt. John will talk about the exciting biology of the live specimens he will bring to the event. Snakes, turtles, lizards, horseshoe crabs, and other marine life may be a part of the menagerie. His presentation will include lots of hands-on time with the “critters.”
The Landings lagoon system and its importance to our area’s ecosystem will be the topic of the CCA of Skidaway’s May meeting and seminar to be held on Monday, May 14, at St. Peter’s Church beginning at 7:00 pm. Sean Burgess, The Landings Association’s Environmental Manager, will be the featured speaker. Sean will also give attendees an update on the work being done on the sprayfield off McWhorter, as well as other areas of local interest. Sean will offer an overview of The Landings lagoon system design, function and uses. In addition, he will take a look at the fishery management programs created jointly by CCA and The Landings Association that have produced one of the best freshwater fisheries in our area.
