On Saturday, July 27th the Cast Away Club’s featured topic was “Bee Wild”. Lisa Wood of Bee Cause taught the kids all about bees. Lisa brought a bee hive to show the kids how the hive works – the role of the queen bee, worker bees and the drones. Lisa explained the importance of bees and the mission of the organization to inspire the next generation of environmental stewards while protecting our planet’s precious pollinators. Everyone that attended received honey sticks and a bio-degradable flower pot (seeds included) to start their own pollination garden and was invited to visit the Bee Garden located at Sparrow Field. After the nature presentation the kids and their parents fished the lagoon for about an hour. Volunteers were on hand to distribute fishing rods and bait provided by CCA. Volunteers also helped set up and repair rods as necessary. Cast Away Club events are always free. Kid’s logoed Cast Away Club hats and insulated drink bottles are available for a $10 donation. CCA is a non-profit organization with chapters on the Atlantic, Pacific, and Gulf Coasts. For more information about CCA of Skidaway, contact Rick Tallon (417) 294-2002. A slideshow of photos from the May 28, 2023 Kids’ Fishing Derby. The Derby planned for Saturday May 27 was postponed one day due to a heavy tropical depression that had brought bands of heavy rain to the entire southeast coast for days. Fortunately, the weather cooperated for Sunday May 28 and a great derby was had by all!
“Always be Yourself Unless You Can Be a Turtle” was featured at the Saturday, Sept 24th Cast Away Club Event. The Skidaway Island Audubon Diamondback Terrapin Rescue program has a huge following here on the Island. The rescue program is led by an enthusiastic group of Audubon Volunteers who monitor the nesting, relocation of eggs and release of the baby turtles here on the island. There were live baby turtles for everyone to touch and hold. Kids also learned how the mama turtles dig their nests, lay their eggs, and finally cover up the nest to protect their eggs. That is when the rescue program begins. After the session kids and their parents had an opportunity to fish together from 9:30 until 11:00. Rods, reels and bait, were provided by Coastal Conservation Association (CCA) Skidaway. Our Google Photos album for the event is below.

CCA Volunteers and Camp R.O.C.K Youngsters Both Learn Lessons at Fishing Outing We typically think of outdoor education in terms of learning new skills, such as building a campfire or tying a fishing knot. Time spent outdoors, however, also has a way of instilling important personal attributes such as patience and perseverance, not to mention discovering how working together can make a big difference. These life lessons all came into play recently when more than two dozen youngsters attending SAFE Shelter’s Camp R.O.C.K (Recognizing Our Children’s Kreativity) joined volunteers from the Skidaway Chapter of the Coastal Conservation Association (CCA) at the Kid’s Lagoon for a morning of fishing. Camp R.O.C.K. is an eight week day camp for children staying in the shelter that combines education and summer fun. After a quick orientation, CCA volunteers teamed up with a camper or two and spread out along the bank of the lagoon, everyone hoping to catch a few bluegill. Most all of these youngsters were new anglers, so learning to cast and working up the courage to hook on a worm (yuck!) were the starting […]
