The Sapelo Chapter had a membership drive on Saturday, February 20th. Here’s what the event’s coordinator (Russell Kent) had to say about the evening’s activities, ” We got slammed by a large, hungry crowd on Saturday and were quickly overwhelmed. The good news is that we were slammed by a large, hungry crowd. But the better news is that a number of people just stepped up like it had all been planned, did the work that had to be done and made this event a huge success in every way! So who are these mild mannered superheroes…they include our State Chairman and CCA Skidaway member Tom Rood, CCA Sapelo members Tim Tarver, Ed Henderson, Dustin Chavers, Susan Roach and my sweet baby Nicki Newton, CCA Bulloch member Brian Kent and two of my neighbors Ashley Chavers and her amazing 7 year old daughter Kayley. Couldn’t have had a better team.” Russell went on to say, “Now the numbers…we had about 110 people that ate 10 bushels of oysters, 500 steamed clams, 1/2 bushel of roasted peanuts, 10 pounds (dry weight) of macaroni covered with 10 pounds of cheese, 25 pounds of sweet potatoes mashed and mixed with 10 pounds of […]

On Saturday, February 6th, CCA GA had a booth at George Proveromo’s National Seminar Series stop held at the Armstrong Conference Center in Savannah. This fishing seminar was co-hosted by Georgia’s DNR/CRD Executive Director- Spud Woodward and had about 300 anglers who paid to attend the show. Former CCA GA board member and one of Savannah’s premiere fishing guides- Roger Burge was a presenter at the seminar. Pictured above is CCA GA membership chair- Pat Brooks and his son Walker manning our booth. Our interactions with the crowd resulted in signing up 15 new CCA members and getting one donation to our Habitat Conservation projects. Tom Rood- CCA GA Chairman and Skidaway member – Dave Devore also spent time at the booth answering questions about who we are and what we do.

2016 Sapelo Oyster Roast & Membership Appreciation Event

At last week’s beginning session of the 2016 Georgia legislative session, CCA GA was instrumental in getting a new bill introduced for a coastal tag to support habitat improvements along the Georgia coast. DNR Commissioner- Mark Williams and Spud Woodward- Director of CRD (pictured above) were there at the Capitol when HB 736 was put forward as a simple amendment to the Official Code of Georgia adding a short subsection to create this new tag. Similar to other wildlife tags, the cost of the tag at the local county tag office would be just $25, with $19 paid to a restricted fund administered by the Coastal Resources Division (CRD) of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR), $1 paid to the local tag-issuing authority, and $5 to the General Fund. As with other wildlife tags, renewals will be $25, with $20 paid to the CRD restricted fund, and $5 to the state treasury. This restricted fund to be administered by CRD would be used exclusively for projects to restore and enhance marine habitats through oyster reef creation, construction of man-made reefs along the shorelines of tidal rivers and creeks, as well as construction of offshore reefs in the Atlantic Ocean.
