CCA Skidaway is hosting a day trip Ossabaw Island on Thursday October 3rd. This much anticipated event will feature the day exploring the third largest barrier island on the Georgia coast.
Experience an ecologically diverse island teeming with wildlife, egrets, tricolored herons, eagles, wood storks, hogs, alligators, snakes and the infamous donkeys. You will see the three pre-Civil War tabby cabins that were constructed by enslaved African-Americans.
Learn how Sandy Torrey West, former owner of Ossabaw negotiated with the state of Georgia to protect this island by becoming the state’s first Heritage Preserve that is run by the Ossabaw Island Foundation (the Torrey West House and Estate/grounds are closed due to construction).
Upon arrival there will be a short orienation/welcome before the walking tour (expect to walk 3-3.5 miles). There will be a restroom break at the Club House and lunch around 11:30-12 Noon. Please wear comfortable walking shoes, bring bug spray, sun protection, hat, walking stick (optional), anddepending on the weather a rain coat. You can also bring carrots and/or apples in case the donkeys are around.
All participants must sign a waiver, this waiver will be provided to you via an email which will be sent to you several days after you register. Please look for this email sent from CCA Skidaway, if you do not recieve it, please contact Paulette Hamilton at sushi1103@mac.com or at 610-509-0279. The Ossabaw Island Foundation is very strict about the waiver, there will be no exceptions.
You will be transported on Captain Mike Neal’s Island Explorer, a 42 foot pontoon (there is a bathroom on the boat) that will be docked at Delegal Marina. Plan to be at the marina by no later than 8:30 AM, the boat will be leaving promptly at 9. Box lunches and water will be provided by CCA Skidaway.
